Advanced Resume Writing Tips

These tips make-or-break a resume. When executed properly, they convey a sense of your competence and diligence in your work. Do not rush implementation of these tips.

1. Address the most important requirements specified in the job description. We suggest highlighting the key requirements and then cross-checking against the resume and cover letter to ensure the items have been addressed. Over 90% of the people do not address the requirements in a job description. By doing so, you improve your odds by 10:1.

2. Present a balanced (but correct) picture of your competence in dealing with people, process and technology. Ignoring one of these items may signal a weakness in the area. Most people write their resumes with empty, boastful claims, giving no insight into how they achieved the stated success. By describing the role of people, process, technology, and good decision making, you connect with the hiring manager. Have the reviewing team visualize you in the roles you held. Make your decision making in that role come alive.

3. Craft compelling short stories to use in the interview as well as in your resume and cover letter. Write them on 3x5 inch cards, to use for interview preparation. Stories are our most engaging form of communication. Write stories that engage and cause the hiring manager to arrange a phone screen.

4. Understand the type of evidence the employer is looking for. It may be metrics, numbers, buzz words, key performance indicators linked to one of your prior jobs, or it may be evidence of your judgment and decision making skills. Give the employer exactly what he or she is seeking in terms of evidence. Sometimes, this may mean attaching several other supporting documents with your job application.
