Proofing a resume requires special care and skill. Most people
cannot catch grammar or spelling mistakes in their own
documents. It is helpful to enroll a success team member,
spouse, adult child, partner or friend in the process. Have them
read out loud the resume and cover letter to you. They may be
encouraged to point out awkward constructions, unclear passages,
spelling or grammatical errors.
Spell checkers and grammar checkers will falsely flag a large
number of constructions for correction. It is common to write
resumes using sentence fragments and to drop the noun "I" and
definite articles such as "the". Hence standard word processing
tools are not always useful for catching errors in job search
documents.
Adobe Acrobat Reader to the Rescue!
One tool that the author has found convenient is Adobe Acrobat
Reader. It has a built-in "Read Out Loud" option under "View".
Hence convert your document - resume, cover letter and even an
email - to PDF output (using a utility such as from
www.pdf995.com), then listen to it being read out loud by the
Acrobat Reader, and if it
sounds fine to you, then send it out.
