| Negotiation Skills Refresher for The Job Seeker |
« Back |
Most job seekers hate the final step in their job search - negotiating the terms of employment. It doesn't have to be that way, with a little preparation. We cover all the bases of job negotiation.
Lesson 7 (with video) describes proven methods for negotiating the terms of your employment: |
Plan ahead – knowledge is power. |
Know your worth – experience, special skill, multiple interviews |
Prioritize: What factors are most important to you – location, flexibility, salary, bonuses. Be very clear about your needs. |
Give a range for your compensation, never a hard number |
In negotiation, aim for “fair” deal. Think win/win. Attack the problem, not the person. |
Build empathy for your case. |
Demonstrate that you are fair, but tough on a key point. |
Don’t be afraid to be creative, e.g. the famous detective Colombo line, “Just one last thing". |
Thank the negotiator for time and effort |
Never say “Yes” immediately when the offer is first presented to you |
Seek an employment contract, with protections |
Know typical employer turnoffs | |
